A little light shining through the dark

There seems to be new challenges coming along on a regular basis now, this week it seems that we all had a ‘bad week’ emotionally at the same time. Usually we have them separately so at least there’s one relatively positive person among us but not this week. It has however provided us with an opportunity to talk very openly about what’s happened and call it how it is. In a snapshot, our family is broken, I’ve touched on this before, but now we have come to terms with the fact that we need to heal and it will be a slow process, but it doesn’t mean we have to sit around and feel sorry for ourselves while we wait for some magical process to happen. We are all now ready to seek advice and to be open to our feelings, without trying to suppress them. Of course, if we go to work that’s different, we all agree that we should treat that part of our lives differently, work is not a place for this it’s a constant and sustains.

A little light from the dark has come tonight talking to my son about Julie (Mum) and family memories and how funny it is to have tiny little snippets of memory that stick firmly in our minds, of things that seem trivial but somehow bonded us more closely than ever. Here’s a little sample of what I mean, we were on holiday and staying in Disneyland Paris and it was late and the shops in the park were closed, so we walked to the nearest petrol station where due to the late hour you had to ask for what you wanted through the little pay window and the guy would go and get it off the shelf. So imagine we don’t speak French and he has no English, so we’re off to a flying start, but it soon became a source of amusement to us all and we ended up with a selection of various things. The memory is of when we returned to the room to see the fruits of our labour and one by one out of the bag we produced a series of weird and wonderful food related items that the packets did not do any justice to what was inside. Nevertheless we made the most of it, buttering bread with a spoon and then attempting to cut cheese with said spoon and wondering why the pink bag of chips is not salt and vinegar like it is at home. If someone asks, what was your favourite thing at Disney, was it Star Wars or maybe Raiders of The Lost Ark, no actually it was making a ham and cheese sandwich with a spoon. This is one of many treasures we have as a family that not even cancer can take from us.

I’m looking forward to having some time to talk more about these special little memories.
